poetry workshop / ages 11-16
bee business - a day in the life in all five senses

BACK

What if...
What if you woke up one morning and found that you were a bee?

Things would feel pretty different.
Try watching bees at work in your local park or in your garden, or gardens near where you live.
Or find some here.  More here.  And here!
Look at how they move around and in and out of flowers.
Look close up at the shapes and colours of the flowers.
Imagine seeing the world as the bee sees it.

Using all five senses, write a poem about your busy buzzy business day as a working bee, from the moment you come out of the hive (below) to your first flower-visit.
Medicinal herbs grow on the farm. See below the pictures for some of their names...

Make notes...
About what you - the bee - can see, hear, taste, feel and smell as you go about your day. Gather your ideas together.

Medicinal Herbs

Picture
bugle
garlic
feverfew
sage
echinacea
evening primrose
sedge woundwort
lavender
ladies mantle
self heal
chamomile
marigold
borage
fennel
peppermint
soapwort

Try reading the names of the medicinal herbs aloud. Can you include them in your poem? Try using the unusual sounds of the words to inspire the other words you choose for your poem. Try using assonance (vowels that sound similar) or alliteration (words with the same consonant sounds).

Also, think about the names of the flowers
Why might you - the bee - choose to visit... Marigold... For money?
Borage... For courage?
Soapwort... To wash your feet?

Some of the names contain clues about how people might use them medicinally - self-heal, feverfew.
