poetry workshop / ages 7-11
animal haiku

BACK

Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry.
A haiku has 3 lines.
In the first line there are 5 syllables.
In the second line there are 7 syllables.
In the third line there are 5 syllables.

A syllable is a unit of sound. The word 'beautiful' has 3 syllables: beau-ti-ful.

Try writing a haiku about one of the farm animals.
Try using colours and sounds to bring the poem to life like Will Harper-Penrose does.
Try using some words that start with the same sounds.

Here are two Haikus by Will Harper-Penrose

LADYBIRD
Lipstick red lady,
Flighty yet often friendly,
Jewel of the woodland.

CROW
Cacophonous calls,
Send a warning to them all,
Corvids great and small.

You can read all of Will's Haikus here
A-Z of British Wildlife

Watch a film of the ponies munching.   Watch a film of the pig and her piglets snuffling.
Watch Big Red the rooster and his friends having lunch.

Try writing a longer poem using haikus as verses. You could write a verse about each of the animals.
If you can't get the right number of syllables in each line, don't worry.

Try writing a haiku that starts with a question, like this one by Will Harper-Penrose.

 MOLE
Who's that in the hole,
Digging up the grassy knoll,
Pesky little mole.
