I was virtually there. I was about to start a small cottage-industry-style creative writing school in the front room of my home. We'd moved to Bristol in August 2019 and then spent the next six months rewiring, replumbing, stripping off fifty-year-old wallpaper, stripping out carpets and sanding floors of our 1938 art deco house.
The last space we tackled, after the bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and sitting room, was my writing room. We built book cases, knotted, primed and painted them and finally got the books out of storage to line up along the walls. I brought out the small tables and chairs, ready to start offering day-retreats for writers in a peaceful, companionable place to spend the day with other writers. I was planning some one-off workshops and then... Covid 19 happened. The world stopped. It was as though I'd just opened my mouth to say something and someone clapped their hand over it and shut me up. So now I'm virtually here instead. I have begun to build this website as a springboard for online work and, I hope eventually, as a resource for writers meeting and writing together again in the real world. |
